
Somewhere in a lab, a piece of human skin is alive right now. Not on a body. Just… alive. In a dish. Being observed. Fed experimental compounds. Having its reactions recorded by machines that report back to an AI model that’s learning what makes skin do things.
If you’re picturing The Face of Boe from Doctor Who (the ancient, disembodied face-in-a-jar that turns out to be the last remnant of the most traveled man in the universe), you’re not wrong to go there. The image that pops into your head when you hear “human tissue kept alive outside a body for a month” isn’t a skincare ad. It’s a Season 28 fever dream on the BBC.
But here’s the thing: Lady Gaga is involved. And if anyone can make “living skin in a laboratory” feel like a completely reasonable Tuesday, it’s the woman who wore an entire dress made of raw meat to the 2010 VMAs.
That was fashion. This is science. The line is thinner than you’d think.
What Outer Bio Actually Is
Last week, Lady Gaga publicly announced her co-founding role at Outer Bio, an AI and biology startup that her fiancé Michael Polansky has been running since 2022. The company’s flagship platform is called YUNA, and it does something the cosmetics industry hasn’t been able to do before: it keeps ex vivo human skin tissue alive and measurable for up to four weeks.
For context, the industry standard for ex vivo skin testing is a matter of days. A week if you’re lucky. After that, the tissue degrades too much to give you reliable data. Outer Bio cracked that window open to a full month, and that changes the math on what you can test and how much you can learn.
Here’s the feedback loop they built: An AI model predicts which untested chemicals should affect a particular skin function, whether that’s aging, inflammation, regeneration, or repair. The living tissue tests the prediction. The results go back into the model, whether the prediction was right or wrong. Then the AI gets smarter, makes a better prediction, and the cycle continues.
Six weeks per candidate. Compared to an industry average of 18 months, that’s not an improvement. That’s a different game entirely.

Where Lady Gaga Fits In
Gaga isn’t just lending her name here. She’s on the board of directors at Outer Bio, and her announcement of the company brought a fundraising story that was already moving on $23 million from Wing Ventures, Initialized Capital, and Polansky’s own firm Hawktail to the front page of every tech and entertainment outlet simultaneously.
It’s worth pausing on the meat dress thing for a second, because the internet already has. The woman who wore a garment constructed entirely of cuts of raw flesh to one of the most televised events in music history now co-founded a company keeping skin alive in a laboratory for AI training. The cosmic irony is real. The discourse is having a moment.
For the record, the meat dress was a statement about the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Gaga has always been deliberate about the things she puts on her body and why. The move into biotech research is consistent with someone who thinks carefully about the relationship between physical form, science, and what we’re trying to say about both.
And if you need another Gaga reference to make this feel right, she also played the Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel, a blood-drinking immortal who maintained her ageless complexion through methods that were, shall we say, more aggressive than the Outer Bio approach. The Countess would have loved YUNA. It’s cleaner.
The Part Where It Gets Good
Here’s where the story shifts from science fiction pitch to actual good news: what Outer Bio is doing solves a problem that’s been expensive and ethically messy for a long time.
Animal testing in the cosmetics industry is widely recognized as a poor proxy for human outcomes. A compound that irritates a mouse’s skin doesn’t necessarily irritate human skin the same way, and vice versa. Simple cell cultures are even more limited: they strip out the complexity of a real organ, the dermis, the epidermis, the immune cells, the structural proteins, all the interactions that make human skin behave the way it does.
YUNA keeps all of that intact. The tissue that Outer Bio works with comes from surgeries, skin that would otherwise be discarded, and it retains its full structure, including the resident immune cells and the biological activity you’d expect from a living organ. When they test a compound on it, they’re testing it on something that behaves like actual human skin, because it is actual human skin.
That means fewer wrong turns. Fewer dead ends after 18 months of development. And significantly fewer animals in the research pipeline, because you’re testing on a human-accurate model from day one.
Six current leads in the pipeline. Four of them approaching commercialization. A new candidate roughly every six weeks.
What They’re Actually Selling
Outer Bio isn’t coming for your shelf space. No serums, no face wash, no Lady Gaga edition SPF 50. The company’s whole thing is to be invisible to consumers: they find the molecule, they prove it works on actual human tissue, and then they hand it off to cosmetics brands, ingredient suppliers, or pharmaceutical companies who figure out what to put it in.
Which means if YUNA leads somewhere interesting, you might eventually buy the product without ever knowing Outer Bio’s name was anywhere near it. That’s the business. Discovery on one end, licensing on the other, and a very expensive wet lab in the middle doing the part nobody else wants to do.
What makes this different from how most ingredient research has worked historically is that the wet lab produces human-accurate data from the jump. No animal model to translate from, no simplified cell culture standing in for a system it was never built to represent. You test on real skin. You learn about real skin. Fewer dead ends after a year and a half of work.
Six leads in the pipeline. Four approaching commercialization. Whether any of them become something you can actually buy is a separate question, but the pipeline exists and it’s moving.
The whole setup would have sounded like bad science fiction five years ago. “We keep human skin alive in a jar for a month and run an AI on it” doesn’t exactly fit on a pitch deck. And yet here we are, and Lady Gaga is on the board, and $23 million came from somewhere. The Face of Boe at least had the dignity of being the last of his kind. The skin in Outer Bio’s facility was going to get thrown out after surgery. Now it’s training a model. Stranger things have funded a serum.

The Broader Signal
Outer Bio is part of a shift that’s been accelerating across biotech: the merger of AI prediction with biological wet lab feedback loops. You see it in drug discovery, protein folding, and now skincare. The pattern is the same. Use AI to narrow the search space. Use the biology to verify. Feed results back. Repeat.
What’s different here is that Lady Gaga is the co-founder, which means the story has enough cultural surface area to reach people who weren’t going to read a TechCrunch piece about ex vivo tissue models. That matters. The ethical shift away from animal testing in cosmetics has been slow partly because consumers don’t know what’s happening in the labs that source their ingredients. Outer Bio being a public-facing story, even a glamorous one, changes the awareness math.
The meat dress made people talk about a policy. YUNA might make people ask what’s actually in their serums.
That’s not nothing.
